Note of New Years eve 2023

Making myself a coffee this morning, I was pushed onto memory lane. Must be the Old Year vibe...

I remembered my stay on the coffee farm Finca Ometepe, in Nicaragua, many years back. The simple folded beds, the crazy cold showers. Arriving there in the dark.

I had hooked up with a mixed match of backpackers a few days before in Leon, and while they were fun people, that night at the Finca, my ever present need to be alone overpowered the magic of this place and I decided to move on early the next day.

It's one of those places on that imaginary list of 'one day... I might revisit'.

Google maps easily found the Finca for me tonight, and it now even has online booking options. For € 72 a night. Which is crazy for Nicaraguan standards, I suppose, even nowadays.
But the online booking option set me thinking even more. How much traveling has changed with the cheapening of tinternet and of smart phones. Honest to dog, I have no idea how I managed back then. Asking fellow backpackers where they'd been, having a look at their Lonely Planet certainly, but also just showing up at a bus stop and giving luck a go. How did I ever find (not hear about, but managed to arrive at) that campsite at the Pacific that I went to next? How did I figure out where to change buses, without speaking more than three words of Spanish?
But I got there.

I suppose my love for the times I went to Central America are only part due to the beautiful nature and charming towns of the countries I visited.
I also loved the aspect of winging it. Giving chance a go. Something we were already lacking in my part of Europe for years and years.
Any lessons for myself here?
